Nigerian man pleads guilty to $6m inheritance fraud scheme in U.S.

A Nigerian citizen, Okezie Ogbata, has admitted guilt in a Florida district court for orchestrating a fraudulent scheme that defrauded over 400 elderly and vulnerable Americans of more than $6 million.

The U.S. Department of Justice disclosed that the 36-year-old, alongside his accomplices, deceived victims by sending fraudulent letters posing as representatives of a Spanish bank.

The letters falsely claimed the recipients were heirs to multimillion-dollar inheritances from deceased overseas relatives. Victims were then instructed to send money for supposed delivery fees, taxes, and other payments to avoid government scrutiny.

During his plea on January 15, Ogbata confessed to masterminding the transnational fraud, which primarily targeted elderly individuals, exploiting their vulnerability for financial gain.
