Spanish-Nigerian striker, Samu Omorodion, has been nominated for the U23 Player of the Month for February 2024 following his impressive performances for Deportivo Alavés.
Omorodion was nominated alongside Manchester United loanee, Mason Greenwood; Barcelona youngster, Lamine Yamal; Real Madrid midfielder, Eduardo Camavinga; and Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso for the award.
Omorodion has also been nominated alongside teammate Álex Sola for the Play of the Month which is given to the best build-up leading to a goal.
The duo combined for Alavés’ only goal in their defeat to Barcelona with Sola swinging a cross with the outside of his boot which found the head of the unmarked Spanish youth international.
The duo will have to beat Vinicius Junior’s build-up with Jude Bellingham for Real Madrid’s second goal in their 4-0 thrashing of Girona and Gorka Guruzeta’s assist for Yuri Berchiche during Athletic Bilbao’s victory over Real Mallorca to the award.
Omorodion has been in red-hot form in recent weeks, scoring in three consecutive La Liga games including a strike against defending champions Barcelona but has only scored twice this month.
Omorodion has hit double figures already for goal involvements in the Spanish top-flight having registered 9 goals and one assist.
Who is Samu Omorodion?
Omorodion was born in Melilla, Spain, to Nigerian parents in 2004. He began his career playing for Sevilla’s youth side before moving to Granada in 2021.
The youngster made his La Liga debut against Atletico Madrid this season and scored in his team’s 3-1 loss to Diego Simeone’s side.
The 19-year-old’s performance in the game led to his transfer to the Rojiblancos but he was immediately loaned to Deportivo Alaves for the rest of the season.
Since joining Alaves, Omorodion has scored three goals in 11 games in La Liga this season.
He is eligible to represent the Super Eagles due to his Nigerian parents and the Spanish national team since he was born in Spain.
He has represented La Roja at the youth level, featuring for the under-19 and the under-21 sides.
