The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), led by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has resolved more than 1,000 petitions over the last five years.
These petitions addressed various issues, including emergencies, stranded citizens, consular challenges, trafficking cases, and deportations.
Dabiri-Erewa highlighted these achievements as part of the commission’s mandate to strengthen ties between Nigeria and its citizens abroad while fostering diaspora investments. The commission, established in 2019 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, has played a key role in protecting Nigerians overseas and promoting the country’s interests globally.
Speaking during a review of NiDCOM’s activities, Dabiri-Erewa expressed gratitude for the agency’s accomplishments and acknowledged the challenges it has faced. She commended the dedication of the commission’s staff and outlined plans for a brighter future for the agency.
“The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has handled over 1,000 petitions in the last five years, ranging from emergencies, stranded citizens, consular matters, trafficking, and deportation issues. We have also recorded significant growth in diaspora investments in Nigeria,” she said in a statement issued by Gabriel Odu of NiDCOM’s Public Relations Unit on Friday.
Dr. Sule Bassi, the Secretary to the Commission, emphasized the critical role of NiDCOM’s staff in fostering diaspora engagement, attracting investments, and safeguarding the welfare of Nigerians abroad. While acknowledging the hurdles the agency has faced, he expressed confidence in its ability to deliver effective services and continue promoting Nigeria’s positive image worldwide.
NiDCOM’s efforts over the past five years underscore its commitment to addressing the needs of Nigerians in the diaspora and leveraging their contributions for national development.
