Kennedy Ubeku, a Nigeria-based businessman residing in South Korea, has praised Adegoke Fayoade, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Zone 2, Lagos, for his integrity in rejecting a N174 million bribe from a suspect.
Ubeku, speaking in an interview in Lagos on Sunday, described Fayoade’s actions as commendable and an example for others to follow.
The bribe incident occurred when CSP Ngozi Braide and her team, acting on the AIG’s instructions, apprehended internet fraudster Patrick Akpoguma in Lagos. The suspect offered the large sum of money in an attempt to evade arrest. Braide, on Fayoade’s orders, accepted the bribe of $100,000 (approximately N174 million), but instead of accepting it, she registered it as evidence and proceeded with the suspect’s detention for investigation.
Ubeku applauded the decision, emphasizing that it should serve as a source of inspiration for Nigerians, especially those in the diaspora. He noted that Fayoade is part of a growing movement within the police force dedicated to restoring Nigeria’s reputation, both locally and internationally.
He further added that Nigeria is in urgent need of systemic reform, and every citizen has a role to play in helping the government to enhance the country’s image globally.
In a related development, Hashimu Argungu, Chairman of the Police Service Commission, also praised AIG Fayoade for his professionalism and integrity, calling the incident a positive and reassuring step forward for the police force.
