The Nigerian government has summoned Libya’s Chargé d’Affaires following the ongoing crisis involving the Super Eagles, who are currently stranded in Libya after their flight was diverted.
Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar announced this at the State House on Monday, October 14, 2024.
He explained that Nigerian authorities have been in direct communication with the Super Eagles, and officials from the Nigerian mission in Libya have been dispatched to offer assistance.
Tuggar described the situation as unfortunate, stating, “The Super Eagles traveled to Libya for a match. As you know, the Libyan team was here and was supposed to land in Uyo, but they ended up landing in Port Harcourt, where they were not supposed to.”
He further elaborated, “Our team’s flight to Libya was diverted to a different airport, where there was no aviation fuel. We’ve decided that they need to refuel and depart as they cannot continue from that location due to the lack of food. When they landed in Kano, they were fortunate to receive some water, as even that was scarce.”
Tuggar added that Nigeria had already established contact with the team, and the mission’s representatives are on the ground, assisting the delegation.
“I have also been in direct communication with the chairman, and since last night, we have been in discussions with the Chargé d’Affaires, as Libya does not have an ambassador here,” he stated.
