The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has disclosed that 3,590 inmates across the country’s custodial centers are currently on death row. This information was provided by NCoS spokesman Abubakar Umar on Wednesday.
As of September 3, 2024, the total inmate population stands at 84,741, with 82,821 males and 1,920 females. Umar reported that out of these, 57,750 inmates are awaiting trial, including 56,303 males and 1,447 females. Convicted inmates total 21,900, comprising 21,519 males and 381 females, while 1,501 inmates are serving life sentences, with 1,478 males and 23 females.
The death row population includes 3,517 males and 73 females. Umar highlighted that the high number of awaiting trial inmates presents a major challenge for the NCoS. He assured that efforts are underway to address this issue by expediting judicial processes.
He credited the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for supporting initiatives that reduced the inmate population by releasing 4,063 individuals who were given options to pay fines or compensation. The NCoS is also addressing custodial congestion through the construction of new facilities, expanding community sentencing, improving court logistics, and implementing other decongestion measures.
Umar noted that partnerships with various agencies have enhanced security and resulted in positive outcomes around custodial facilities. The NCoS has also focused on reinforcing facility security and maintaining a stable environment, with no reported incidents of internal unrest.
Significant improvements have been made in the treatment and care of inmates, including enhanced personal reformation and rehabilitation programs. Umar highlighted the successful collaboration between the NCoS and the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), with 1,282 inmates enrolled in various academic programs as of August 31, 2024. Among these, 1,215 are pursuing Bachelor of Science degrees, 62 are enrolled in Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) or master’s programs, and five are working towards a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), with three currently writing their thesis.
