The federal government announced that Nigeria’s power generation has reached a three-year high of 5,313 megawatts as of Monday. This update was shared in a statement by Bolaji Tunji, spokesperson for the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.
Minister Adelabu called on Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to ensure they utilize the increased energy output to avoid potential grid collapses. He explained, “If power is generated but not utilized by the DisCos, it could lead to a grid collapse as frequency levels drop. We will work to encourage industries to buy bulk energy to prevent this.”
In May, the federal government committed to achieving 6,000 megawatts of electricity generation by the end of the year. During a recent ministerial address in Abuja, where he outlined the ministry’s progress since President Bola Tinubu took office on May 29, 2023, Adelabu revealed that power generation had already reached 5,000 megawatts as of May 3.
Adelabu reaffirmed the government’s goal to reach 6,000 megawatts by the end of the year, with further enhancements planned for the power sector in 2023.
