A police officer visiting HMP Frankland Prison in Durham, United Kingdom, was stabbed in the chest shortly after 11am on Tuesday.
The officer, who was from an outside police force, was quickly transported to the hospital by ambulance and is reported to be “conscious and talking,” according to police.
Durham Constabulary released a statement saying, “Shortly after 11am this morning, Durham Constabulary were called to an incident at HMP Frankland in Durham City. A police officer, who was visiting the facility from an outside force, suffered a stab wound to the chest during the incident. The injured officer has been taken to hospital by ambulance, where he is described as being ‘conscious and talking.’”
HMP Frankland is a category A men’s prison, the highest security level, which opened in 1983. It houses over 800 male prisoners aged 21 and above, typically serving sentences of four years or more, life sentences, or high-risk remand.
The prison has held many notorious inmates, such as Charles Bronson, Levi Bellfield, serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, Soham murderer Ian Huntley, and serial rapist Delroy Grant. Other infamous prisoners include Lee Rigby’s killer Michael Adebolajo, nail bomber David Copeland, and Sally Anne Bowman’s murderer Mark Dixie.
Inmates are housed in single cells equipped with a TV, washbasin, and toilet facilities. Good behavior is rewarded with game consoles and DVD players.
