A 35-year-old Indian man, Santosh Lohar, from Pandua in Jharkhand, India, resorted to an extraordinary tactic after being attacked by a snake during a nap. In retaliation, Lohar bit the snake to death.
The incident occurred while Lohar was sleeping. Upon being bitten by the snake, he quickly grabbed the reptile with an iron rod and bit it twice. Explaining his actions to India Today, Lohar said, “In my village, there’s a belief that if a snake bites you, you must bite it back twice to neutralize the venom.”
This superstition, which is popular in his community, suggests that biting the snake back can prevent death. Lohar was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital, where he received an anti-venom antidote and was released the following day.
The type of snake that attacked Lohar has not been confirmed. India is home to nearly 300 snake species, with more than 60 being highly venomous, including the Indian Cobra, Russell’s viper, the common krait, and the saw-scaled viper.
