Ahead of the Poland vs Netherlands match at Euro 2024, a man wielding an axe was critically injured by German police in Hamburg.
The incident took place on Reeperbahn around 12:30 p.m. local time. The man was reportedly brandishing the axe aggressively towards police officers before they shot him multiple times.
The area near a Dutch fan zone was tense as supporters gathered for the match, which ended 2-1 in favor of the Netherlands with Wout Weghorst scoring a late winner.
The man had also allegedly threatened to ignite a petrol bomb, leading to police using pepper spray before resorting to gunfire.
Medical attention was provided to the man, whose motives for the incident remain unclear.
