Nigerian students launch start-up to bridge healthcare gap for elderly parents abroad

Three Nigerian Master’s students studying in the UK have unveiled a new start-up, Sandfortcare, dedicated to providing healthcare services to the elderly parents of Nigerians living abroad.

Damilola Olaopa, the founder of Sandfortcare, was inspired to create the service after a personal experience. “A colleague who worked as a healthcare assistant tragically lost his father in October 2023,” Olaopa explained in a statement released to the media. “This event made me realize the challenges faced by Nigerians abroad who worry about the well-being of their elderly parents back home.”

Sandfortcare is currently focused on serving the Nigerian diaspora in the UK, offering a personalized and compassionate healthcare experience for their parents in Nigeria. “We understand the anxieties that come with distance,” said co-founder Hameed Abdulrahaman. “Our aim is to ensure that parents receive the highest quality care tailored to their specific needs, giving their children in the UK peace of mind.”

For a monthly subscription fee, Sandfortcare offers a comprehensive package of services for senior citizens in Nigeria. This includes personalised care and support plans, regular health checks, nutrition and meal planning, remote consultations and medication management.

Samuel Isatayo, another co-founder, emphasized the benefits for families: “The sponsoring family member in the UK receives regular reports on their parent’s health and well-being, fostering a sense of security and control.”
