Sketching Success: Abidemi Praise’s quest to break Guinness World Record for portrait marathon

Abidemi Praise, a Sunderland-based multi-talented artist and the creative force behind Biddyvegas Art World, is gearing up for a monumental challenge: breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest marathon drawing portraits. In this exclusive interview with allnaijadiaspora, she delves into her artistic journey, the motivations behind this record attempt, and how she’s preparing for this incredible feat of artistic endurance. Excerpts:

Tell us a bit about yourself and why you’re passionate about this record attempt.

My name is Abidemi Praise, and I’m the creative force behind Biddyvegas Art World. Fueled by a lifelong love for the arts, I wear many hats – seamstress, drawer, and actress. My artistic journey began at the young age of 10, when I first discovered the joy of drawing in primary six.

Can you describe the specific record you’re trying to break?

I’m gearing up to tackle a huge challenge: breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest marathon drawing portraits! This means I’ll be drawing portraits continuously for an extended period, and according to Guinness World Records, each portrait needs to be a recognizable likeness of the person I’m drawing. It’s going to be an intense but rewarding experience, and I’m excited to see how many portraits I can create!

How did you find out about this record category? What sparked your interest?

My heart lies in mixed media art, and I initially set out to break a Guinness World Record in that category. Unfortunately, my application wasn’t accepted. Instead of giving up, I delved into existing records, searching for a challenge that resonated with me. That’s how I came across the marathon portrait drawing record – a feat that remains unbroken! It’s the perfect combination of endurance and artistic expression, and I’m determined to make history by breaking it.

What’s your training regimen like? How long have you been preparing?

Right now, I’m sharpening my skills with consistent drawing practice. To truly test my stamina, I’ll be attempting a 24-hour practice drawing session next month

I’ve been actively training for this attempt for the past five months. While living in the UK can be quite demanding, I’ve been strategically utilizing my time to hone my drawing skills. Prior experience definitely helps, but building endurance for such a long drawing session requires focused practice. I’m confident that with consistent training in the coming weeks, I’ll be fully prepared for the challenge.

What motivates you to break this record?

This record attempt is fueled by a powerful combination of personal relaunch and self-challenge. After nearly four years away from art due to relocation and settling into a new life, I felt a strong pull to return to my passion. This attempt is my way of diving back in headfirst, pushing my limits and proving to myself that I can achieve anything I set my mind to. It’s a chance to reignite my artistic fire and reclaim my creative identity.
I motivated myself, I challenged my self to start diving into my fields after almost four years of diverting due to relocation and settlement

What are some of the biggest hurdles you’ve faced in training, and how are you overcoming them?

The biggest hurdle initially was getting my drawing skills back up to speed. After a long break from art while settling in the UK, I noticed my abilities had declined. However, by consistently practicing, I’ve managed to reclaim my artistic confidence and sharpen my skills. Now, I’m feeling fully prepared for the challenge ahead!

When and where will you be attempting this record?

It will take place in Sunderland, United Kingdom.

Will there be official Guinness World Records representatives on-site?

I am not entirely sure, but if non, there is a log book that witnesses can fill and it will be sent together with the evidence.

Do you have a specific strategy for your record attempt day?

Strengthening my faith and having your support are both incredibly important to me. Plus, a little entertainment and music will definitely help keep my spirits high throughout the long haul!

Have you drawn inspiration from any other record holders?

Absolutely! Hariom Kumar Singh’s achievement is incredibly inspiring. Spending 77 hours, 1 minute, and 16 seconds creating caricatures is a phenomenal feat of artistic endurance.

Is there a personal story or message you hope to share with your record attempt?

This record attempt is more than just a challenge for me, it’s a relaunch. Many talented Nigerians, myself included, have left home seeking opportunities. We often end up in jobs that don’t utilize our creative talents. This attempt is my way of reclaiming my passion and reigniting my artistic vision. I hope it inspires others to hold onto their dreams, no matter the circumstances.

What advice would you give to others who dream of setting a Guinness World Record?

My biggest advice is for them to stay focused. It can be done.

How did you discover your artistic talent?

My artistic journey began in Airforce Primary School, Ibadan. My older brother and sister were both gifted at drawing caricatures, and one day they held a friendly competition. They even included me, handing me a sheet of paper. When the results came in, it was a humbling experience. Their drawings were fantastic, bursting with personality. Mine, on the other hand, resembled a collection of random strokes and circles. They laughed, but my sister, ever supportive, took the time to teach me some basic techniques. From that moment, I was determined to improve. My dedication didn’t go unnoticed – my mom would often scold me for tearing pages out of my notebooks to use for drawing!

By secondary school, my artistic skills had developed considerably. One day, my brother placed a cup on the table and challenged me to draw it. To my surprise, I captured its form quite well. That’s when he introduced me to the concept of light and shadow – a revelation that opened a new world of artistic realism. Suddenly, everything around me became a potential subject. Drawing became more than just a hobby; it became a lifeline during tough times. Whenever I was low on funds, someone would inevitably request a drawing, and that little bit of income would see me through. Art has consistently saved me in countless ways.

What are some of your proudest artistic achievements? Have you received any awards or recognition?

There have definitely been some incredible moments on my artistic journey! One of the proudest was landing a contract to draw Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State. It was a huge honor, and it showed me that dedication and hard work can truly pay off. Even more special was the reaction from my mom. She was initially hesitant about my artistic pursuits, especially when compared to the traditional paths of doctors and lawyers. But seeing me land this prestigious project made her a proud mom of an artist – a validation that meant the world to me. On top of that, receiving an award in Ghana this past January (2024) was another fantastic achievement. It’s incredibly motivating to be recognized on an international scale.

As a woman in a male-dominated field, what are your experiences? How does it feel to be a female artist?

Being a female artist is empowering. It allows me to express myself uniquely and contribute a valuable perspective to the art world. I hope my journey can inspire other aspiring female artists to pursue their creative dreams with confidence and determination.

What gives you the confidence to achieve this record and make your mark on the art world?

Sharing my art with the world feels incredibly liberating. Drawing isn’t just a skill for me; it’s a source of joy, relaxation, and even a potential tool for mental health awareness. That’s why I’m passionate about creating fun and creative centres in Nigeria, particularly for underprivileged communities and those with disabilities.
