Temi Adeniji makes waves as head of Warner Music Africa

Temi Adeniji, the Nigerian-American Managing Director of Warner Music Africa (formerly Warner Music South Africa), is making her mark on the global music scene. In a recent interview with BONA, Adeniji reflected on her journey to the top and her vision for the future of African music.

Adeniji joined Warner Music Group in 2016, steadily climbing the ranks from Director of International Strategy and Operations to her current position. In 2021, she became the youngest Managing Director of a territory within the company, overseeing a major restructuring of Warner Music’s operations in Africa. This included the integration of Africori, a leading digital distribution and artist development company, and the establishment of a record label focused on amplifying diverse African voices.

“Our goal is to create a platform for African artists to achieve global recognition,” states Adeniji. She highlights the growing popularity of African music on platforms like TikTok, with recent successes like CKay’s “Love Nwantiti” and “Tshwala Ba M” demonstrating the continent’s vibrant music scene.

Adeniji also sees an opportunity to reshape music consumption globally. “Pop music is evolving,” she says, “and with the rise of Latin music, we’re moving towards a more democratized approach. This will involve including artists from Africa, India, and Latin America, creating a richer and more diverse soundscape for audiences worldwide.”

Leading in a male-dominated industry hasn’t been without its challenges. “Being a black woman in my early 30s when I took on this role presented unique obstacles,” Adeniji admits. “There have been moments of loneliness and underestimation, but I’ve focused on trusting my instincts and the work I’ve done.”

Adeniji credits her success to immersing herself in South Africa’s culture and building a strong local team. She also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance, especially when navigating a new environment.

With a keen eye for talent, Adeniji mentions Nigerian artist Joeboy and Gauteng producer Yumbs as some of her favorites. “Joeboy’s voice is captivating the world, and Yumbs’ innovative remixes are turning heads,” she says.
