Dubai dream turns nightmare: Nigerian shares story of online agent scam

A Dubai-based Nigerian man, Shehu Adewale, has shared his harrowing experience with online employment agents, highlighting the dangers individuals face when seeking greener pastures abroad. In a viral TikTok video, Adewale recounted his journey filled with exploitation, betrayal, and ultimately, resilience.

Adewale described his desperate situation in Nigeria, with a failing business and a troubled marriage, which led him to an online agent promising a visa, job, and a comfortable life in the UAE for a hefty N1.2 million fee. Blinded by hope, Adewale sold his belongings and paid the agent, only to be abandoned upon arrival in Dubai.

“He promised me endless job opportunities and a luxurious life,” Adewale stated in an interview with Sunday Punch. “That’s why I paid him, never suspecting his intentions. He even promised to pick me up from the airport, but as soon as I landed, he switched off his phone and disappeared.”

Landing with only $300, Adewale faced immediate exploitation at the airport, losing his remaining money and luggage. He was forced to sleep on the streets for days until a kind stranger offered temporary shelter. However, this respite was short-lived, as he was soon scammed again and left homeless.

Through sheer determination, Adewale secured a tailoring job and worked tirelessly, hoping for a work permit. However, after three months of unpaid work and an expired visa, he was discarded by his employer – a practice he claims is common for companies exploiting foreign workers on tourist visas.

With no income and facing illegal immigration status, Adewale’s struggle intensified. He resorted to menial jobs, scavenging for food, and even faced imprisonment due to a misunderstanding at work.

A pivotal moment arrived when Adewale met Abike, a woman who offered him support and shelter during his darkest hours. With renewed hope, he secured a new job and, through hard work, earned a two-year work permit.

While Adewale eventually found some stability, his story serves as a stark reminder of the dangers and difficulties many face in their pursuit of a better life abroad. He emphasizes the importance of thorough research, cautiousness when dealing with online agents, and realistic expectations. “Don’t rely solely on online promises,” he advised, urging others to learn from his experience.
