Statistics show that over 60 percent of Nigerian immigrants aged 25 and above possess at least a bachelor’s degree. As of 2015, there were approximately 376,000 Nigerians and their descendants living in the U.S., making Nigeria the leading African country of origin for immigrants to the United States.
Despite these accomplishments, many Nigerian immigrants face considerable challenges in securing employment that matches their qualifications.
Although they bring strong educational backgrounds, professional skills, and work ethics, issues such as non-recognition of foreign credentials, limited familiarity with American workplace culture, and lack of professional networks often hinder their progress in the U.S. job market.
Highly qualified individuals, including doctors, engineers, academics, and legal professionals, frequently encounter difficulties in having their degrees recognized or are required to pursue expensive certifications to continue in their fields.
Others struggle with the nuances of job applications, interviews, and communication styles that differ from those in Nigeria.
In response to these obstacles, The Nigerian Center in Washington, D.C., in partnership with Upwardly Global, will host a virtual job readiness workshop on May 28, 2025.
The session aims to support Nigerian immigrants in their efforts to build successful careers and achieve financial stability in their new environment.
This online event will focus on essential career development tools, such as resume writing, interview preparation, and navigating the American job landscape.
It will also introduce participants to employment programs provided by Upwardly Global that are specifically designed to assist skilled immigrants.
Additionally, the workshop will provide vital information about legal and social services available through The Nigerian Center.
These include immigration support, help accessing public benefits, and other community resources to ease the settlement process.
The event will also feature an interactive Q&A session, giving attendees the opportunity to ask employment and immigration-related questions and receive guidance from experts.
By connecting Nigerian immigrants to career-building resources and support services, this initiative aims to empower participants to reach their professional goals and contribute meaningfully to their communities and the U.S. economy.
